One of the more unique challenges in assisted living placement is finding accommodation that offers arrangements for couples. The couple still sees each other daily and may even share meals and common time together, but go to their respective rooms at the end of the day.  This arrangement works for some couples as one realizes he or she cannot take care of the other. Assisted living facilities that offer studios, apartments or even large private rooms, welcome couples who can benefit from this type of arrangement. The focus, however, should always be on the spouse who is older or needier.

Couples in this situation may find it more difficult to have the privacy they once had or have trouble socializing in common settings.  Because of this, if a shared room or apartment is not available in an assisted living facility, in-home care is a better option.
